Motocross, often condensed to MX or MotoX, is a type of motorcycle sport which is organized on enclosed off-road circuits. Motocross has originated from France and seeks its genesis to British Scrambling competitions. The name motocross is a blend of the words Motorcycle and Cross Country. It is a flourishing, well-liked and thrilling sport. The excitement of highflying dirt bike racing not only provides ecstasy to the riders, but to the viewers as well. Apart from fun, motocross racing is a risky sport where anything can take place. There are some key factors that attract both the racer and the spectator to motocross race. The first being the speed, second is the possibility of fame and last might be the hidden uncertainties.

The sport of motocross is turning out to be exhilarating family events as it necessitates the entire family to pull together in order to make it out to each race. It’s not an entirely new sport and has been in tradition for a long period. Initially it was popular as a British off-road event called Scrambles. The first of these races was held at Camberley, Surrey in 1924. In the later years, European motorcyclists offered it a slight makeover and for the duration of the 1930s, it grew in fame. The time subsequent to the Second World War witnessed the dominance of BSA which was then the biggest motorcycle corporation in the world. BSA riders took the world off its feet and won various motocross competitions throughout the 1950s.

Japanese motorcycle companies made their entry into this arena in the late 60s and took the challenge of the European for supremacy in the motocross world. In 1970s, Suzuki captured the first world championship by winning the 250cc crown. In the U.S., the first stadium motocross race was organized in 1972 at the Los Angeles Coliseum and a 125cc world championship was held in 1975. Along with the European riders, who kept on dominating the arena throughout the 1970s, American riders made their mark by winning international championships in the 80s. All the major manufacturers have shifted their base on the four-stroke machines in this decade. In recent times, the game has come up with new schedules and divisions as stadium events (Super cross and Arena cross) are now being held in indoor arenas.

The sports world offers some great motocross events: FIM's Grand Prix and the AMA's American National Championship. The AMA Motocross Championship is an outdoor series which sees the beginning of its season in early May that continues until mid-September. It involves 12 rounds at 12 key tracks all over the continental United States. On the other side, the Grand Prix- also hailed as Motocross World Championship- is mainly organized in Europe. This race contains two classes; MX1 and MX2 and forms a longer series of 16 rounds. Other famous motocross event is the annual Motocross des Nations, which comes in picture as soon as the National and World Championship series gets over.
