There are few sports as self-fulfilling as rowing. Many people are introduced to “rowing” on a Concept II or other “rowing” machine. In a gym environment, speed and stroke rate are encouraged. However, the true sculling stroke involves a recovery that takes considerably longer than the drive. And rowing on open water involves rhythm, thought and all of one’s senses. Most importantly, ours is an entirely non-impact full body exercise that works the three main muscle groups of the body: legs, back and abs, while quieting your mind. The serenity of an early morning row is unequalled. On a calm morning, you peer past the low mist that hugs the shore and stretches across the glassy bay, while the challenges of the day ahead dissolve into insignificance. A hundred yards from the dock, all you hear above the sound of oars dipping into swirling puddles are the flapping of wings, as cormorants march across the water taking flight, or the spring loaded slamming of a cottage door 300 yards away. The setting moon is to your left, above windows scorched by the reflection of the sun rising up to your right, just over pines standing at attention. At your stern, the V of your wake gives credibility to the energy expended with each stroke. Though you’re simply rowing “for the fun of it,” occasionally, you dream. And maybe your thoughts are of the Charles River in October and the glory the HOC brings. To get there, you would train one hour for every stroke over the winding river. You reach out at the Entry, lightly grip the oars, gather the water and snap the handles to your chest. You force every breath out of your lungs and picture the Eliot Bridge behind you, legs aching, heart pounding and sweat pouring. Rowers haven’t been called the world’s most physically fit athletes for nothing. The sport demands endurance, strength, balance, mental discipline and an ability to continue on, when your body is demanding that you stop. What can recreational rowers expect for themselves? All of the above, but in moderation. Few activities offer the total enjoyment package of rowing: beautiful scenery, physical workout, camaraderie of fellow rowers, the challenge of athleticism and the quiet, inner peace and serenity awarded by a blissful glide across a glassy, misty lake at the crack of dawn. Alden’s rowing shells have been the vanguard of recreational rowing for more than thirty-five years, be it on the flat waters of protected lakes – or the open water of the oceans. Not satisfied to rest on our laurels, we continually strive to challenge ourselves and implement product improvements, as they’re vetted. We’re proud to offer carbon fiber versions of our QUEST, STAR and STAR Double shells and believe in the performance advantages that this material offers. Today’s Alden is truly market driven and we respectfully look to the community of friends & fans of Alden to tell us how we’re doing. The rowing experience is elegant and challenging. It is cerebral and physical. It is solitary and team-oriented. The beauty is that everyone has the option to make of it exactly what they want. And we’re here to help you enhance your rowing experience. But don’t just accept our word – give us a call so that we can introduce you to a life-long love affair with one of the fastest growing athletic activities around – and one that can be picked up or returned to at any age.
